These works examine how one’s own subjectivity is under construction as one
simultaneously takes part in the creation of culture through mimicry. They illustrate by
surreal dislocations, the ways in which social codes persuade individuals to contort
and adjust themselves in order to be accepted. The act of mimicry opens up a tactile
experience of the world in which the categories of subject and object are not firm, but
rather malleable.
In these works Halonen is placing herself as an artist into situations often reminiscent of
minimalist sculptures, photographing the result. The attempts to adapt to the surrounding
inevitably slip into conscious parody or tragicomic ambiguity and the process is revealed
as one of constant change The artist appear as a slapstick, even ridiculous figure, but
also as one who is tremendously vulnerable. |
